From Gianluca Vialli to Gianluigi Buffon. From the black, white and blue Sampdoria icon – on and off the pitch, closely linked to coach Mancini – to the 2006 world champion: a charisma, a reputation that can somehow be overlaid with the qualities of the unforgettable Gianluca Vialli.
Gianluigi, “Gigi” Buffon has accepted the appointment proposed by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina as head of delegation for the national team. The goalkeeper, ex Parma, Juventus, Paris Saint Germain, has decided to give up football and in recent days has terminated his contract with the Emilians.
He will make his debut in his new role on September 12 in a qualifier for the next European Championship in Milan against Ukraine.
“I’m returning to the national team because the kid who crossed the Coverciano goal for the first time thirty years ago still dreams and wants to live that dream together with the Italian fans. The national team comes first.” Buffon said in the note just released by the FIGC.
“It’s a great day for the Italian national team,” said the FIGC President, “because Gigi is coming back home. Buffon is an icon of our football and a special person.”
