The pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the economic crisis and today the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Situations that have led to an increase in worries and fears and therefore an increase in stress in adults and beyond. “There is clearly an increase in gastroenterological diseases, particularly functional diseases such as reflux and irritable bowel syndrome. In fact, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), drugs that inhibit gastric acid secretion, are among the best sold in pharmacies.” This was explained by Luca Frulloni, president of Sige, the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy (Sige) and full professor of gastroenterology at the university Verona, on the sidelines of the presentation of the new guidelines on celiac disease in the Senate.
“Gastroenterological diseases, together with hepatobiliary diseases, are – according to the data – the third most common cause of hospitalizations in Italy after cardiovascular and respiratory diseases,” recalls Frulloni. But how much do Italians spend on gastritis medications? “Over time, the unit cost per capsule has decreased enormously,” answers Frulloni, “with the introduction of equivalents on the market, considering that today you can buy 28 ppi tablets for 6-8 euros, while before wanted three euros for a few years.” .
